Looks Like The Apple Cart Is Set To Topple

Whenever you’re on top, there’s always someone looking to take your throne. In the volatile world of mobile apps, that means the Apple cart is always in danger of being tipped over. When you’re looking at the regions that matter in the IT world, you need to consider Asia Pacific when any of the latest innovations and trends are the things you need to be concerned with.

That said, it looks like there are some new shifts in the landscape that includes Android apps perhaps upsetting the Apple app world for the first time. Ovum Ltd released their report, Mobile Application Download and Revenue Forecast: 2011–16, last week and there were some interesting findings including the fact that mobile app downloads are expected to reach 5 billion by the end of this year. That’s right, 5 billion. And what’s even more surprising is the quantum jump from the 1.6 billion downloads last year. It’s clear that part of the world is one of the bigger forces that need to be reckoned with when it comes to the flourishing mobile app download market.

There’s more. The same study says that mobile downloads are expected to reach 14 billion over the next five years and the numbers here are even showing that Apple is losing its grip in the region as the dominant supplier. The report says that 1.8 billion apps would be downloaded in Asia Pacific from the Android platform this year as compared to 1.5 billion in Apple’s corner.

Experts are suggesting the gap will continue to widen between the Android market and the Apple iPhone apps for one good reason—price. Along with the recent advances Android has made in the field, they have made good headway into what the pundits call lower price points. It’s good to know the more technical products get, some of the older more traditional models still hold true.

On that subject, here’s a few of the top apps that created a buzz in the industry this year.

There’s Spy Mouse and Angry Birds Season, both from Rovio who are making a good name for themselves in this kind of app market. For those of you that like bigger boy games, the reviews for NFL Rivals are outstanding and MadPad even lets you aim and shoot to capture the sounds of your life and then share the mixes with the world.

Rumor: Apple iPad 2 Gets iPod Touch-Like Back And Wide Range Speaker

So, the second-generation iPad, Apple iPad 2, may have a smaller bezel, a flat back panel and a wide range speaker, a new unverified report claims.

Japanese Mac blog “Mac Otakara” published the rumor Thursday, citing an “anonymous Chinese source.”

According to the source, the LCD screen on the next-generation iPad will stay the same size, while the new tablet will be 3mm smaller, reportedly measuring 239-mm by 186-mm. The current iPad, which measures 242.8-mm by 189.7-mm, was criticized for its wide bezel when it was first unveiled in January.

Apple will reportedly change the back of the new iPad to be “flat like an iPod touch,” which would also resolve criticisms that the iPad’s curved back is impractical. According to the report, the Ambient Light Sensor has been moved to the “upper center of the rear panel” and has a new 3mm slim hole.

The rumor also suggested that a slot on the bottom of the device, which was spotted in early case designs, is actually a “large wide ranged speaker unit covered with metal mesh.”

A second rumor that the iPad 2 will have two cameras: a front camera for FaceTime and a rear camera equipped for recording video, was labeled as “unreliable information” by the blog.
